I believe that word study is very important as it teaches the students the building blocks needed for reading and writing. Word study activities must be hands-on and varied in nature to assist students in exploring language. When teaching sight words, I use a sequence of 5 techniques:
See and Say - show the word on a flashcard, have the children say the word as I underline it.
Spell reading - Children say the word and spell out the letters, then read the word again.
Arm tapping - Children say the word, spell the word while tapping their arms, then read the word again.
Air Writing - Children say the word, then write the word in the air in front of them.
Table Writing - Writing the letters on paper, first looking at flashcards and then not.
This is an example of an activity that assessed the students' ability to identify the relationship between letters and sounds, a vital step in building a strong base in literacy.
This is an example of one of the many sight word practice activities for Kindergarten. It is important to have a variety of ways to practice reading, writing, and speaking these words.
