I believe that when teaching math to young students, they learn best through hands-on exploration with manipulatives. A successful math lesson needs to have 5 steps: fluency, new concepts, exploration, application, and regrouping/resharing. By following these steps, students can build upon existing knowledge and apply new learning.
This is an activity I made to help students understand ten frames as a tool to count and keep track of counting. Students began to see numbers in a different way, for example, 7 is a row of 5 and then 2 more.
Number bonds are a very useful tool in understanding how numbers can be put together and taken apart. This video was used after number bonds were introduced and explained through examples how they can be used to solve simple story problems.
